Robotic Urologic Surgery

Robotic Urologic Surgery

A urologic condition is any disease or disorder that affects the male reproductive organs or the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra). When lifestyle changes, medicine or other options do not ease your symptoms, your doctor may suggest surgery, and robotic surgery might be the best option for you.  Our Robotic Urology team specializes in prostate cancer removal, and kidney cancer removal.

Prostate Cancer Removal:

The robot facilitates the removal of the cancerous prostate from the tight confines of the pelvis, while sparing the near-by nerves and muscles affecting sexual function and urinary control. Using the robot, your surgeon has a better tool to spare surrounding nerves, which may enhance both your recovery experience and clinical outcomes. If the nerves can be spared, the patient has a significantly better probability of regaining sexual function.

Benefits of Robotic Prostatectomy:

  • Effective Cancer Control: Studies have shown that experienced surgeons have achieved excellent results in removing prostate cancer without leaving cancer cells behind.
  • Improved and Early Return of Sexual Function: Studies have shown that most patients have an earlier return of sexual function.
  • Improved and Early Return of Continence: Studies have shown that most patients have a rapid return of urinary continence.
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery: The da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.

Kidney Cancer Surgery:

Kidney growths or tumors may now be carefully removed, while leaving normal kidney tissue untouched (known as partial nephrectomy), and functioning. Sometimes, the conditions may warrant removal of the entire kidney (radical nephrectomy). All of this meticulous surgery can be performed without the need for a large, painful, and disfiguring incision.

Benefits of Robotic Kidney Surgery:

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less pain
  • No sacrifice to tenets of cancer surgery principles
  • Much less need for blood transfusions
  • Tiny incisions = tiny scars
  • Preserve healthy kidney tissue - minimizes need for future dialysis
